Top tips for mums working from home
Being a work at home mum can be difficult, especially when juggling both your kids and your careers but by setting a few ground rules you should be able to make it work. These top tips will help you organise yourself when you are working from home.
Define your ‘work’ space
Have a dedicated space for your home working, if you just do it anywhere you will end up distracted and unable to separate work from home, which might mean you are tempted to go back to it after you have finished for the day. Set your working hours and stick to them.
Plan your day
Have a list of things you need to get done that day, this will provide structure to your day and save you getting distracted. It helps to have a list of ‘must-do’ items and then some ‘to be done this week’ items so that you are not tempted to cut short your hours.
Make sure you plan breaks
Everyone needs a break when they’re working so have set times for a morning coffee break, lunch and a tea break. This will give you an opportunity to stretch and get away from the computer and will also save you snacking unnecessarily because you get bored!
Work around your family
Mums with young kids and children can still work from home but make sure that you have enough energy and are able to juggle a focus on work and looking after your kids. This will become easier once you settle into a routine but having supportive family or friends to help out when you are busy with work can be a lifesaver.
Keep in touch with your boss
Working from home is all well and good but make sure that you maintain contact everyday with your boss/company/other employees. This will help make you feel like you are part of the working team and means you can get involved in the office workload and ensures that you are doing what they need. It will also help your boss to realise that home working is a productive and profitable move.
