Description:
Started in 1926, and completed 50 years later, Portmeirion is an enchanting village set in woodland by a beautiful estuary.  It was designed by the architect Clough Williams-Ellis, who was particularly concerned with the aesthetical value of buildings and proving that development need not detract from the natural beauty of an area.  The buildings in Portmeirion are now listed Grade II.  The winding roads and alley-ways are a delight for children to explore, and if you're lucky with the tide-times you could also get to enjoy the gorgeous sandy beach - but note that there are lots of steps down to the front, so you'll need to carry the pushchair or use a baby-carrier.
Many of the buildings house shops, with goods ranging from Portmeirion pottery to The Prisoner memorabilia, for fans of the 1960s cult television series.  The Golden Dragon shop stocks a range of children's books, while the Ship Shop has a lovely selection of toys.  The Town Hall is a self-service restaurant, or treat yourselves to ice-cream at Cadwaladers, where you will also find sandwiches and drinks on the menu.

If your children are either young enough to sleep through or old enough to enjoy a three course lunch, try the hotel restaurant, where you can lunch for £12 (note: this is sometimes booked out for private functions).  The hotel is also spread out throughout the village, as all of the cottages are either hotel rooms or self-catering accommodation.
