New Rules on School Meals

Posted on Wednesday, 16 September 2009 05:40PM by
Many parents and campaign organisations are welcoming the new compulsory standards for school meals.  Fizzy drinks are now banned, and chips can be served no more than twice a week.  The food that is served must be nutritionally balanced, with plenty of fruit and vegetables.  The government has also set up an initiative to establish whether free school meals can help to improve children's health.  A pilot is being undertaken in two authorities, and if deemed successful, the scheme may be rolled out to all local authorities.  Jamie Oliver has been at the forefront of the campaign to improve school meals, since his 2005 TV series. Improvements in children's performance in exam results and school attendance were demonstrated just one year after his healthier school meals were introduced in the borough of Greenwich.
