Description:
Winner of the European Museum of the Year 2001 - and rightly so!  This vast museum houses the national collection of steam and other locomotives and associated railway memorabilia; here you will find the record-breaking Mallard, a replica of Rocket, and part of a bullet train, amongst many other famous engines.  This is a place for children of all ages - and even non railway fanatics cannot fail to enjoy a visit here.  True fanatics will find it hard to leave.  The interactive learning area is excellent (allow plenty of time for this area), there is a model railway section, and few will fail to be impressed by the beautifully maintained engines and carriages.  Enjoy a drink and snack in the Signal box cafe or a more substantial meal in the licensed Brief Encounter restaurant.  Alternatively, make use of the indoor or outdoor picnic areas.  Family-friendly facilities have been well thought out and are of a high standard.

Other facilities:
  • Bottle-warmers provided in parent & baby rooms
  • Road-train rides available into the centre of York (fare payable)

Open:

Daily 10.00 - 18.00  [Closed 24th - 26th December]
