The SS Great Britain was the largest
steam-liner of its time, launched in 1843. It was designed by Isambard
Kingdom Brunel and took emigrants to Australia. Now docked at Bristol,
it has been undergoing restoration for several years, and the work continues
today. The ship is a fascinating place for children to explore, with
some displays to bring the history to life. Pushchair access is
currently limited, although improved wheelchair (and therefore pushchair)
access is a long-term aim of the restoration project - so watch this space
for details of improvements! In the meantime, we would recommend
bringing a baby-carrier for tinies, and letting toddlers explore on foot.
While you're there, you could also visit the replica of The Matthew, Cabot's
ship in which he crossed the Atlantic to discover Newfoundland in 1497.
Baby-changing facilities are provided on-shore in the Dockyard Cafe Bar. |
