This magnificent house, home to the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, is surrounded by beautiful gardens and parkland is a real "must-see" for those interested in our British heritage.  Building of the original house commenced in 1552, but this house was completely re-constructed during the lifetime of the 1st Duke of Devonshire, and during this period, the gardens were developed.  Over the years the house has seen considerable alterations and additions, as have the gardens, famous for their fountains and waterworks.  Today both house and gardens are beautifully kept, and the needs of visitors have been carefully considered.

If you have time, you could also visit the Farmyard and Farmshop which form part of the 35,000 acre estate.

Other notes:
  • Large parts of the gardens are accessible with a pushchair
  • Back-carriers are provided for taking little ones into the house
  • There are very many visitors to the house & gardens, and you may find you have to queue to use toilet facilities and the restaurant - so be sure to bear this in mind.  Pack snacks to keep little ones going when they get hungry.
  • The 1000 acre park surrounding the house is the perfect place for little ones to let off some steam and for picnics, weather permitting.
