Description:

This fascinating house, former home to the Armstrong family is probably best-known for its pioneering use of electricity - it was the first house in the world to be lit by hydro-electricity.  Lord Armstrong was a true "gadget man" - as early as Victorian times, Cragside had running hot and cold water, a lift and a flushing toilet.
The grounds are vast, so you need to allow plenty of time to explore them - you can even drive to different parts of the grounds in your car, for example to reach the adventure playground, which is well worth a visit - one of the best we've seen at a National Trust property.  It's also a great incentive for those children who are more reluctant to tour the house - promise them a trip to the playground afterwards and they may be more co-operative while you admire the interiors!  There is also an activity room in the house where children can do drawings etc.

Take a picnic or enjoy a meal or snack at the Stables restaurant (lunch served from 12.00 - 14.00)
