Ban on Product Placement for Junk Food

Posted on Friday, 12 February 2010 01:52PM by Jude Williams
The campaign to prevent product placement for junk food has won a major victory this week.  The government has announced that foods high in salt, fat or sugar will not be permitted in product placements on UK-made TV programmes.  Of course, this does not influence TV programmes imported from other countries, but since many children's programmes are UK-made, the ban is a very significant result.  There are concerns that product placement of junk food in TV programmes in other countries may be linked to increased levels of obesity and type 2 diabetes in the local populations.  For further information about the campaign in the UK visit www.sustainweb.org.
