Food : Feeding &  Weaning

There are many resources for advice on feeding - from books to internet sites.  It is now universally acknowledged that where possible, breastfeeding is best for both mum and baby - but of course for many reasons some mums simply can't breastfeed, or choose not to, and these days there are good quality organic formula milks available.

Unicef has reported that breastfeeding rates are still lower in the UK than in many other European countries.  Their worldwide Baby Friendly Initiative identifies hospitals which satisfy a set of criteria, including having trained staff to provide support for new mums who are starting to breastfeed.  The number of births in Baby Friendly accredited hospitals in England is reported as just 10% , lagging well behind Scotland (46%), and Wales and Northern Ireland (34%).  For further information about their assessments of hospitals, visit www.baby.friendly.org.uk.
