For steam railway fans, this really is a
must-visit - but it also makes a great day out for anyone, with the
beautiful scenery of the North Yorkshire moors to enjoy from the leisurely
pace of steam travel. Older children will be keen to visit
because of its connection with Harry Potter and the Hogwarts Express!
Trains run from Pickering up to Grosmont and back, stopping at three
stations along the way. Some trains also now travel through to Whitby. Stop off to see the picturesque
village of Goathland (known to TV's "Heartbeat" fans as Aidensfield), where
sheep graze right up to the roadside. There are several pubs and
tea-rooms to choose from if you wish to eat there. Refreshments,
including light meals, are available at Pickering, Goathland and Grosmont
stations.
Other notes:
- There is good pushchair access onto
platforms, but you will need to lift your pushchair onto the train, or ask
for assistance from the guard.
- Baby-changing facilities are provided at
Pickering Station, but not currently at Grosmont.
