|
This excellent book by
Kim Wilde (of former pop chart fame!) is full of great ideas
for getting your children involved in gardening. Many
of the projects are simple enough for even toddlers to
participate, and older children will be able to do some of
the projects without help from grown-ups. |

There are also some lovely ideas for seasonal celebrations in

The Complete Book of Mother &
Baby Care |
|
Elizabeth Fenwick |
|
Dorling Kindersley |
|
Elizabeth Fenwick's book is an
excellent reference for anyone who's pregnant or has a baby.
You'll find answers to all sorts of questions about baby-care in
here - from how to bath baby to a guide to illnesses and
suggested action to take when your child is unwell. The
section on pregnancy includes a guide to baby's development,
advice on diet and exercise, and really practical lists of what
you'll need to have for the birth and the early days, in terms
of clothes and essential equipment. We like the fact that
the "essentials" really are just that - if items are optional
they are shown as such, so you don't end up with a shopping list
of unnecessary things which will end up unused at the back of
the cupboard! |

Gentle Baby Care

|
Contemporary Books
|
|
This book is a great addition to the
bookshelf for any mum-or-be or new mum. It has advice and ideas on
just about everything you need to know about baby care in the first year.
If you get this book before you have children, you may well read it
cover-to-cover; once you have a baby it's more likely to be a resource to
dip into if you have questions as you go along. From nappy-changing to
travelling with your baby, you'll find all sorts of information here.
The author is supportive and non-judgemental in her dealings with some
of the more sensitive or emotive aspects of baby care, and even offers
suggestions on how to deal with "unwanted advice". |

How to be a Domestic Goddess
|
|
Nigella Lawson
|
|
Chatto & Windus
|
|
This book is a real favourite with us, not just for
the great recipes, but also for the wonderfully warm way in which Nigella writes
about food. The book has sections on pies, puddings etc, and contains a chapter on baking
for/with children; as Nigella puts it, "so much of children's baking isn't about
what they can be left alone to get on with, but about what you do together".
Nigella also emphasises the importance of involving children in the preparation
of everyday meals, not just children's food. We fully agree with
this - helping to cook gives children the ideal opportunity to develop a
whole host of skills. |

It's so important to help your children develop a
healthy attitude towards food from an early age - and there's nothing like
getting them involved in making a meal in order to achieve this. This book is a
great way to get them started - even very young children will be able to help
out, and slightly older children will be able to complete the simple-to-follow
recipes by themselves, or with minimal adult supervision. There are all
sorts of things to make, including breads, main courses, puddings and festive
foods. |

Consciously Female
|
|
Dr Tracy Gaudet
|
|
|
|
We often describe books
we feature as a "must-read", but for women this really tops
the list. If you can make time to read only one book
this year, then make it this one. Gaudet leads a
centre for Integrative Medicine in the US. This
medical approach embraces all types of medicine, therapies
and healing, to be used as appropriate with the aim of
optimising health and wellbeing holistically. This
book will help you to enhance your awareness of your body
(and soul) and its female cycles and major life phases,
flowing through them with acceptance and joy rather than
resistance and fear. |
